DESCRIPTION OF THE
COURSE |
Theory
and Practice of Translation Spanish to English
is designed for the students of the Teaching
English and Translation Major. During the
course, the students will acquire theoretical
knowledge and they will develop the necessary
skills to practice the process of translation
from their native language, in this case,
Spanish to their second language, in this
case, English.
The translation student will learn how to
become an ethical professional by creating
awareness of how necessary it is to become
responsible in acquiring necessary and appropriate
research tools once they become active in
the field. The need for well- trained specialized
translation professionals is growing constantly,
especially in technical, academic, scientific
and international business fields because
of international trade and the current globalization
tendencies.
Therefore, an academic goal of the course
is to prepare professionals who will be
able to contribute to the intellectual,
professional, and commercial progress of
the country in order to be prepared to become
immersed in the globalization process and
acquire the level to compete with other
countries |
OBJECTIVES |
1.
To acquire theoretical knowledge
of the translation process from Spanish
to English.
1.1 To distinguish the necessary strategies
for the translation process
1.2. To assimilate the semantic, lexical,
and cultural concepts, by analyzing diverse
text types for the translation process
2. To recognize the professional
responsibilities of the translator.
2.1 To create awareness of the importance
of assimilating theory, and cultivating
skills through the constant practice of
the translation process as an academic activity.
2.2 To discuss the importance of training
professionals with theoretical background
and skilled knowledge to cultivate a high
professional profile for the field.
3. To develop research
skills to be used as a tool to translate
diverse text types.
3.1 To organize the process of translation.
3.2. To recognize the academic and professional
need to cultivate research skills such as
searching for technical lexicon or specialized
terms.
3.3. To uderstand the importance of building
a data bank of bibliographical and technological
references to meet semantic, lexical and
and terminological chanllenges whenever
they may arise.
4. To choose the appropriate
theoretical concepts when facing common
translation problems.
4.1. To assess which strategies should be
used to carry out the transposition of semantics
from one language to the other.
4.2. To analyze which linguistic, semantic,
lexical, grammatical and cultural elements
should be applied based on theoretical background
for translation.

METHODOLOGY |
Attendance
and participation are compulsory for the
process of acquiring the theoretical background
to be carried out properly. The course is
taught in a single weekly two-hour session,
with theory, practice, class participation,
and in-class work and out-of-class practice.
The instructor will guide the student through
the learning process, because the methods
and techniques used in this course are mainly
constructivist. The instructor will assign
weekly readings about the theory of the
translation of the textbook and other complementary
readings. Students should arrive prepared
so that the class can be an interactive
workshop type of lesson where everyone contributes
to the analysis of the readings and exchange
of ideas in regards to the theory of the
translation process from Spanish to English.
Students will proceed to translate texts
in which translation problems will be identified
and linguistic problem-solving skills will
be practiced applying the theoretical concepts
to be assimilated from this academic exchange.
The student will build his or her own knowledge
by means of research, constant translation
practice and analysis of texts. The procedures
in the classroom are active and personalized.
There will be individual and group work
with the objective of developing in the
student the freedom to choose learning techniques,
critical thinking, the skills and activities
to develop a cooperation attitude and research
skills. At every moment the methodological
strategies that are applied in the classroom
seek to develop the student's complex thought;
especially: decision-making processes, problem-solving
skills and promoting critical and creative
thought.
All sessions of the course will be taught
in a computer lab, and students should access
Blackboard to identify class tasks for the
session. Readings, questions, theoretical
information exchanges, analyses and application
of theoretical concepts, and identifying
examples of theory problems to present to
the class will be used as class activities
for the learning process. |

Degree in Educational Administration from
ULASALLE, a Master's Degree in Linguistics
from UCR, a Licentiate Degree in English
Language Translation from UIA, a Licentiate
Degree in Education with an Emphasis on
Teaching French and English from UNED, a
Licentiate Degree in Tourism with an Emphasis
on Hotel and Restaurant Administration from
U-HISPANOAMERICANA, a Licentiate Degree
in Tourism with an Emphasis on Travel Agency
Administration from U-HISPANOAMERICANA,
a Bachelor's Degree in English from UCR,
a Bachelor's Degree in French from UCR.
He is currently pursuing a Doctorate Degree
in Education at UNIVERSIDAD DE LA SALLE.

| Evaluation |
Student
participation will be evaluated and
assessed according to their improvement
process, therefore, constant assessment
of translated texts, revising, evaluating
and comparing translated texts are
processes to be applied in the study
sessions. The projects, reading and
research assignments and participation
activities are to assess the students’
final product creation, and the process
carried out to attain the course objectives.
